Laser Hair Removal Aftercare: First Week Do’s & Don’ts for laser body contouring plans

By Viora MedSpa | October 10, 2026

We’ve had clients tell us they trusted our team more because we won’t “strongly recommend” a treatment when it isn’t the right fit. We bring that same care to your laser hair removal aftercare. The single most important rule in Los Angeles is this: keep the treated area cool, clean, and out of the sun for the first 24 to 48 hours. That one choice protects your skin and your results.

Laser hair removal aftercare first week do's and don'ts at Viora MedSpa in Koreatown Los Angeles

Quick context: Our laser hair removal sessions are typically 30 minutes, starting at $59, and we treat multiple face and body areas, including the upper lip, chin, underarms, bikini and Brazilian zones, arms, and thighs.

First 24 to 48 hours after laser hair removal: keep it cool, keep it clean

Right after laser hair removal, it’s normal to see mild redness and feel a warm, sunburn-like sensation. Your skin has just been heated at the follicle, so the goal is to calm it down, not challenge it.

Our core rules for day 1 to 2: cool compresses, gentle cleansing, fragrance-free moisture, and zero heat. Heat and friction are what tend to stir up extra redness.

Do

  • Use a cool compress in short rounds if you feel heat. Think cool, not ice-cold.
  • Wash with a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water. Pat dry, don’t scrub.
  • Moisturize with a fragrance-free lotion or gel. Simple is best for the first couple of days.
  • If the treated area is exposed, apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ once you’re not feeling tender, and cover up when you can.

Don’t

  • Skip hot showers, baths, saunas, steam rooms, and heating pads.
  • Avoid heavy sweating (workouts, hot yoga, long walks in the heat) until redness settles. In Los Angeles, that can be tricky on warm days.
  • Don’t exfoliate or use harsh tools like loofahs on the treated area.
  • Do not wax, thread, tweeze, or use depilatory creams on the treated area. Those remove the follicle, and the follicle is what the laser targets.

If you’re commuting through Koreatown and you’re packed onto transit, bring a clean water bottle, a hat, and a small SPF you’ll actually reapply. Crowded platforms plus Los Angeles heat waves can irritate freshly treated skin fast.

Days 3 to 7: the “quiet week” that protects smooth results

This is the week where people accidentally sabotage results, usually by getting sun, using strong actives too soon, or pushing workouts before the skin has calmed down. Keep things boring for seven days. Your future self will thank you.

Los Angeles sun note: Even when it’s cloudy, UV is still doing its thing. Physical coverage, like sleeves, hats, and shade, plus SPF is your best combo. When Santa Ana winds hit and the air feels hot and dry, moisturize a little more than usual.

What to avoid for at least a week

  • Direct sun and tanning. We recommend avoiding intentional sun exposure for at least two weeks, and being strict with SPF 30+ on exposed areas.
  • Retinoids and exfoliating acids (think retinol, glycolic, salicylic) on the treated area. They tend to sting and can prolong irritation.
  • Bleaching creams on treated skin for at least a week.
  • Pools, hot tubs, ocean swims for 24 to 48 hours, and longer if you’re still red or sensitive.

What you can usually do

Most people can return to normal daily activities right away, just with a little common sense. If the area is calm at 24 to 48 hours, shaving is usually fine. Use a clean razor and a gentle shave gel, and don’t chase “perfectly smooth” by going over the same spot repeatedly.

And yes, you can still have plans. We’re in Koreatown near the Wilshire/Western Metro, so plenty of clients stop by after work before dinner or a Wiltern show. Just keep treated skin out of the heat and sun that first day.

The simple product routine we like after laser hair removal (no fancy shelf required)

You don’t need a complicated lineup after laser hair removal. In fact, simple products are usually what keep skin happiest in the first week.

Gentle cleanser

No fragrance, no scrubs, no acids. Lukewarm water. Pat dry.

Fragrance-free moisturizer or soothing gel

Apply a thin layer when skin feels dry or tight. More isn’t better. Comfort is the goal.

Broad-spectrum SPF 30+

Daily on exposed areas. Reapply if you’re outdoors. In Los Angeles, this matters year-round.

If you’re also doing other services with us, like botox or lip enhancement fillers, keep the aftercare separated in your mind. Laser aftercare is about calming the skin and avoiding irritation. We’ll talk you through timing if you’re spacing out appointments.

When to call us: what’s normal, what isn’t, and how we handle it

A little redness, mild swelling, and sensitivity are common right after treatment, especially in delicate areas like the upper lip or bikini line. These usually settle within a day or two. You might also notice hair shedding in the following days or weeks. That’s part of the process, not regrowth.

Reach out to us right away if you notice increasing pain, blistering, spreading redness, pus, or anything that feels like it’s getting worse instead of better.

"The ladies that work here are absolutely amazing and will make you feel so comfortable... They both explains everything thoroughly and will take extra steps to make sure you’re at ease."

, one of our regulars

That’s the standard we hold ourselves to. If you’re traveling after treatment, we still want to hear from you. We regularly see clients coming in from West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Hollywood, Downtown Los Angeles, Silver Lake, and Mid-City, so we’re used to helping you stay on track between visits.

If you like knowing the “why” behind timing and results, we’ve put together a few helpful guides. These are also useful if you’re comparing treatments. People sometimes mix up laser hair removal with non invasive laser fat removal, cellulite devices, or even laser body contouring. They’re different tools for different goals, and we’re happy to help you choose the right lane.

Planning tip: Laser hair removal works on a schedule. Keeping your skin calm and sun-protected between visits helps us stay consistent, which is what drives long-term reduction.

FAQs we get all week in Koreatown

How long should I avoid sun after laser hair removal?

Avoid direct sun on the treated area for at least two weeks, and wear broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily on any exposed skin. In Los Angeles, we also recommend physical coverage when you can, like sleeves, hats, and shade, especially during heat waves.

Can I exercise after laser hair removal?

We generally recommend skipping workouts that cause heavy sweating for 24 to 48 hours, or until redness and heat have settled. Sweat and friction can make irritation linger longer than it needs to.

When can I shower after laser hair removal?

You can usually shower the same day, but keep it lukewarm and gentle. Avoid hot water, steam, and aggressive scrubbing for the first 24 to 48 hours.

Can I shave the treated area after laser hair removal?

Shaving is usually fine after 24 to 48 hours as long as the area feels calm. Use a clean razor and go gently. Skip waxing or tweezing between sessions.

What creams or gels should I use on my skin after laser hair removal?

Stick to fragrance-free, simple products. A gentle cleanser, a basic moisturizer or soothing gel, and daily SPF 30+ are usually enough for the first week. Avoid retinoids, exfoliating acids, and strongly fragranced products on the treated area for at least a week.

Is non invasive laser fat removal the same as laser hair removal?

No. Laser hair removal targets hair follicles for long-term hair reduction. Non invasive laser fat removal and laser body contouring target fat or body shaping goals, and cellulite treatments focus on skin texture. If you’re not sure what you’re actually booking, tell us what you want to change and we’ll point you to the right option.
